VINTAGE FRONTIER

Where every piece of junk has endless possibilities!

DIY Tea Cup Succulents.

This is a gift I gave my mom for Mothers Day. It is amazingly simple and the neat thing is, if your mom doesn’t have a green thumb you can use fake succulents and it looks just a cool.

Tea Cup Succulents

Which ones are real, which ones are fake? Can you tell the difference?

For this project all you will need is:

  • Tea cups. I got mine at the thrift store. If you ever want to be able to drink out of the teacup I would’t use that tea cup for this project
  • Good potting soil.
  • Succulents.
  • Small decorative finishing rocks.

Place a few of the rocks on the bottom of the tea cup. this will help with some drainage. Then fill half way with potting soil. Remove the succulents from their containers and plant in the tea cup. Cover with a little more soil and some of the rocks. Water well immediately.

Caring for your succulents once planted:

  • Succulents are known for being easy keepers and hard to kill. While this is true there are a few things you can do to keep them looking their best
  • Indirect bright sunlight is great for succulents. Most succulents are not frost hardy so dont leave them outside if the temperature is below forty degrees.
  • Because the tea cup that you planted the succulents in does not have a drainage hole you need to be very careful about watering your succulent. DO NOT over water. If you touch the soil and its moist there is enough water. A good rule of thumb is water once a week.
  • Because this is a small container the plant will use up the nutrients in the soil rather quickly, you should use a fertilizer or plant food, it should be low in nitrogen and high in phosphorus. Only use about a quarter of the recommended amount (its a small pot and a small plant).

If you are making this project with fake succulents then you will need:

Tea Cup Succulents DIY

  • The same tea cups.
  • Floral foam.
  • Fake succulents.
  • Small decorative finishing rocks.

Simply cut your floral foam down to the right size for your tea cup. Cut the stems of the fake succulent to the right size. Place the succulents in the floral foam where you want them and cover the foam with the rocks.

That is really all there is to it.

In the end I went with fake succulents in all my tea cups because I didn’t feel right putting a living plant in such a small container, my real succulents went in terra cotta pots.

They are super hardy. But be really careful about not placing them outdoors till you are sure there wont be a frost and the temperature wont go below 40 degrees.

Yea, you are absolutely right about low temperatures. But if you leave them indoors, they are just perfect.
