Five Minute Friday: DIY Memorabilia Christmas Tree Ornaments.

Tomorrow we are putting up our Christmas Tree! Now you might be saying to yourself…”Its not even Thanksgiving yet”…Yes you are right. But the first couple week in December are going to be really busy for The Hubs and I, so I decided to get our tree up tomorrow since I won’t have time again until the third week in December.

To go along with that I have been working on making a few Christmas Tree Ornaments out of special items around my house.

My high school and college graduation tassels have been hanging around my house for years with nothing to do. I know a lot of people do a shadow box with their graduation announcement and their tassel and diploma, but my wall space at home is pretty much all taken up. So I needed to find another use for them.

And thanks to Christmas I have found a great way to display them…and keep them from getting dusty and dirty.

It turns out that tassels fit rather nicely into large glass Christmas Tree ornament.

Simply drop your tassels into the ornament, put the top back on ornament, hang from your Christmas Tree and enjoy.

I used an Ultra Fine Point sharpie to write my initials, the school and the graduation year on the back. The 4 inch glass balls from Hobby Lobby worked the best, anything smaller and you will have a hard time getting the hanging numbers on the tassel through the opening in the ornament.

These are pieces of costume jewelry that belonged to my grandma. The string they were hung on broke but I couldn’t bring myself to throw them away so here is a great way to keep them around with out them cluttering up my jewelry box.

Here are a few other ideas for what you could add to you ornaments:

Sand, small shells, or sea glass from a beach vacation.

Small pine cones, moss and greenery from a mountain vacation.

Flower petals from a special bouquet.

Cut up curled antique sheet music.

Antique handkerchiefs or scarves from a family member.

Some handkerchiefs from a dear friend wedding work well as a Christmas Tree Ornament.

Your children’s Christmas list.

Beads or gems from a piece off costume jewelry.

There really is no limit to what you can fill your ornament with and every year when you hang them on your tree you will have those special memories again.
